Which bike to take
You can ride to Ubud on a 110 cc scooter, but the engine works hard on the longer stretches. A medium scooter (NMAX 155, PCX 160) is a more relaxed ride, and the XMAX 250 is the most comfortable if you carry a passenger. See how to choose a scooter.
When to leave and when to come back
Roads are quietest early in the morning. Weekends and the late afternoon are the slowest, both on the way into Ubud and on the way back towards the coast. Plan to leave Ubud before the evening rush, so that you are not riding unfamiliar roads in the dark.
Route and traffic
Use a live maps app and check the current traffic before you go, because the best route changes with congestion and roadworks. Expect a mix of main roads, busy junctions and narrower stretches near Ubud. Keep a larger gap than you think you need, and watch for trucks and for scooters that overtake on both sides.

Fuel and parking
Fill up before you leave Canggu, and again before the return if the tank is low. In Ubud, use paid parking near the center and walk, because the streets are narrow and crowded. Take your helmet with you and lock the steering.
Rain
If heavy rain starts, pull over somewhere safe and wait it out. Wet roads are slippery, especially painted lines and drain covers. Read our rainy season guide.
