Riding a scooter in Bali's rainy season
Bali's rainy season runs roughly from November to March, with heavy showers that often arrive in the afternoon. Keep a rain poncho on the bike, slow down, brake early and gently, avoid painted lines and drain covers, and wait out the heaviest storms rather than riding through them.
When is the rainy season?
The wet season in Bali runs roughly from November to March, with the heaviest rain often in December, January and February. The dry season runs roughly from April to October. Showers can be short and intense, and they often arrive in the afternoon.
How to ride on wet roads
- Slow down. Braking distances are much longer on wet asphalt.
- Brake early and gently, with both brakes, and avoid sudden movements.
- Avoid painted lines, manhole and drain covers, which are very slippery.
- Keep a bigger gap from the vehicle in front.
- Look out for standing water that may hide potholes.
What to carry
- A rain poncho or rain jacket. Ours come with the bike.
- Closed shoes with grip.
- A waterproof bag or a dry bag for your phone and documents.
- A clear visor or glasses for visibility.
Floods and storms
If water covers the road and you cannot see the surface, do not ride through it. Pull over somewhere safe, wait for the rain to ease and check the road before you continue. Storms often pass within an hour.
Which bike for the wet season
Lighter scooters are easier to handle, but heavier maxi scooters feel more stable on wet roads. For rough, flooded lanes, a taller bike like the ADV 160 helps. Choose what you are comfortable on.
After the ride
Rinse mud and grit off the bike, and check the brakes and the lights. Our wash guide has more tips.
