Do you need a license to rent a scooter in Bali?
Yes. Indonesian law requires a valid license for the class of vehicle you ride. Visitors normally carry their home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) that covers motorcycles. Without one, you risk a fine at a police check, and your travel insurance may refuse a claim after an accident.
What license do tourists need?
Most visitors use their home driving license together with an International Driving Permit (IDP) that includes the motorcycle category. The IDP has to be issued in your home country before you travel. A car-only permit does not cover a scooter.
If you live in Bali long term, you can apply for an Indonesian motorcycle license (SIM C) instead.
Why it matters
- Police checks. Police regularly stop riders in tourist areas to check licenses. Riding without a valid license can lead to a fine.
- Insurance. Many travel insurance policies exclude claims if you were not licensed for the vehicle. Read your policy before you ride.
- Accidents. If something goes wrong, being licensed protects you in practical and legal terms.
Bikes above 250 cc
Indonesia uses separate license categories by engine size, and bikes above 250 cc fall into a higher category than standard scooters. If you plan to ride one of our premium bikes, tell us your license details when you book so we can confirm that the bike suits it.
Other rules to know
- Traffic drives on the left.
- A helmet is mandatory for the rider and the passenger. Our rentals include two.
- You need to be old enough to hold a motorcycle license. In Indonesia that is 17.
- Keep your license, IDP and the bike registration papers with you when you ride.
What we suggest before you rent
Check that your IDP covers motorcycles, read your insurance for riding conditions, and tell your rental shop honestly how much experience you have. A good shop will help you pick a bike you can handle. If you are new to riding, start on a light automatic like the Honda Scoopy.
This page is general information, not legal advice. Rules and enforcement change, so check with Indonesian authorities or your embassy before you ride.
