Riding a scooter in Canggu: rules, traffic and safety tips

Updated 8 October 2026 by Canggu Bike

Short answer

Ride on the left, always wear a helmet, avoid Canggu's main roads at sunset, slow down on wet roads and in the first days, and keep a safe gap in busy traffic. Most accidents involve new riders in the first week, so start on quiet roads with a light, automatic scooter.

The basics

  • Traffic drives on the left.
  • A helmet is mandatory. Do the strap up properly, every time.
  • Wear closed shoes if you can. Flip-flops are the most common cause of foot injuries.
  • Carry your license and the bike papers. See our license guide.
  • Do not ride after drinking.

Traffic in Canggu

Canggu is busiest from late afternoon to evening, especially around Batu Bolong, Berawa and Echo Beach, and on the main road towards Seminyak. Weekends are busier than weekdays. Leave a larger gap than you think you need, use your mirrors and expect other scooters to cut in. If you are new, practise on the quieter lanes first.

Rain and wet roads

Bali's wet season runs roughly from November to March, with heavy afternoon showers. Wet roads are slippery, especially painted lines and drain covers. Slow down, brake early and gently, and avoid standing water that could hide potholes. Keep a rain poncho under the seat. Ours come with the bike.

Road surfaces and hazards

  • Potholes and rough edges are common on side lanes.
  • Sand near the beach can make a corner slippery.
  • Dogs, chickens and ceremonies. Slow down for animals, and give way to processions.
  • Gates and driveways. Cars and scooters emerge without warning.

Fuel

Most modern scooters run on Pertalite or Pertamax from a Pertamina station. Pertamax is the higher-octane fuel and the usual choice for newer or larger bikes. Roadside bottles of fuel exist, but quality varies, so use a station when you can. Ask us which fuel suits the bike you rent.

Parking

Many beaches and cafes have attendants who take a small parking fee. Park in marked areas, never block a driveway, and take your helmet with you. Lock the steering, and do not leave valuables in the seat storage.

If something goes wrong

Stay calm, move to a safe place, and message the shop on WhatsApp with your location. In an accident, take photos, get contact details, and call for help. For anything serious, call emergency services first and your insurer after.
