First time on a scooter in Bali: a beginner's guide
If this is your first time on a scooter, choose a light automatic such as the Honda Scoopy or Yamaha Fazzio, practise for 15 to 30 minutes on a quiet road, wear a helmet and closed shoes, and keep your first rides short and in daylight. Take the main roads only when you feel in control.
Choose the right bike
A light automatic with a low seat is the easiest way to start: the Honda Scoopy or the Yamaha Fazzio. There is no clutch or gear to think about. Avoid manual bikes and heavy maxi scooters for your first days.
Learn the controls
- Right grip: the throttle. Turn it towards you to go faster, and release it to slow down.
- Right lever: the front brake.
- Left lever: the rear brake.
- Use both brakes together when you stop.
- Check the indicators, horn and mirrors before you start.
Practise first
Find a quiet, flat place, such as an empty car park or a quiet lane. Spend 15 to 30 minutes starting, stopping, turning and braking. Practise looking over your shoulder and signalling.
Your first-day plan
- Practise in a quiet place.
- Ride a short loop on quiet roads.
- Avoid the main roads, sunset and rain.
- Increase the distance only when you feel comfortable.
Common mistakes
- Braking too hard with the front brake only.
- Looking at the ground instead of where you want to go.
- Riding too close to the vehicle in front.
- Wearing flip-flops.
- Riding in the rain or at night before you are confident.
