Scooter rental checklist: what to check before you ride

Updated 8 October 2026 by Canggu Bike

Short answer

Before you ride away, photograph every scratch, test the brakes, check the tyres and lights, confirm the registration papers are on the bike, and agree the deposit, fuel and breakdown terms in writing. It takes five minutes and prevents most rental disputes.

Before you leave: the bike

  1. Photograph the whole bike from all sides, plus close-ups of any scratch, dent or crack. A short video walk-around works too.
  2. Brakes. Squeeze both levers and test them in the first few metres.
  3. Tyres. Look for a visible tread and no cracks. Check the pressure feels right.
  4. Lights, indicators and horn. All should work, including the brake light.
  5. Mirrors. Both present and adjustable.
  6. Fuel. Note the level so you can return it the same.
  7. Helmets. Good condition, correct size, with working straps.

The paperwork

  • The vehicle registration papers (STNK) should be with the bike. Police may ask for them.
  • Agree the price, the deposit and the return time before you pay, and keep a copy.
  • Ask what is covered if the bike is damaged or stolen, and what you pay.
  • Save the shop's WhatsApp number for breakdowns and emergencies.

Questions to ask the shop

  • What happens if the bike breaks down? Will you send help or a replacement?
  • Is delivery and pickup free, and where?
  • Are helmets and a rain poncho included?
  • Can I extend the rental, and at what rate?
  • Who pays for punctures and routine wear?

Your first ten minutes on the bike

Ride slowly around the block before you hit a main road. Get used to the throttle and the brakes, check the mirrors and make sure you know how the seat opens and how the stand works. If the bike feels wrong, say so before you leave.

At return

Return the bike at the agreed time and place, with the fuel level you agreed. Show the shop any existing damage from your photos, so the check at return is quick and fair.
