Scooter insurance in Bali: what to check before you ride

Updated 8 October 2026 by Canggu Bike

Short answer

Before you ride, check whether your travel insurance covers riding a motorbike in Bali, whether it requires a valid motorcycle license, and what the rental agreement says about damage, theft and your liability. Ask the rental shop in writing, and keep your documents with you.

Check your travel insurance first

  • Does the policy cover riding a scooter or motorbike?
  • Does it require a valid motorcycle license, or an International Driving Permit?
  • Is there an engine size limit?
  • Does it cover medical costs, and is helmet use a condition?

Many policies exclude accidents if you are not properly licensed, so read the small print.

Ask the rental shop

  • What happens if the bike is damaged, lost or stolen?
  • What do you pay, and how much is the deposit?
  • Who is responsible for traffic fines?
  • What do you do in an accident or breakdown?

At Canggu Bike, damage, loss and theft are handled as set out in the rental agreement, which we explain before you sign. See our rental terms.

Documents to keep with you

  • Your passport or ID card copy.
  • Your motorbike license and International Driving Permit. See our license guide.
  • The bike registration papers.
  • The emergency contact of the shop.

If there is an accident

  1. Move to a safe place and check for injuries.
  2. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt.
  3. Take photos of the scene and the bike.
  4. Message the rental shop with your location.
  5. Contact your travel insurer as soon as you can.
